2017-12-24 – 1 Corinthians 13.1-8 – All You Need is..,

We have been going through a sermon series that is inspired by the Christmas Story. I pray you enjoy these messages and that it brings a little Hope, Peace, Joy, Love to your Christmas as a result.

Last week we enjoyed the Children’s Christmas program, or as young Piper called it a “Christmas Performance”. Then we closed with a message about Joy.

Today’s message title is All You Need is.., and we are going to reflect upon God’s Love for us. As we are preparing for Christmas, my hope as your Pastor, is that you take some time to reflect on the true joy, hope, peace and love, that the coming of the Christ child makes possible for each and every one of us.

Please turn in your Bibles to 1 Corinthians 13, pg 175 in the Inspired, Infallible and Living Word of God, and let us start with prayer.

Love is an amazing thing.. It can make the weakest person strong, and the strongest person weak.”

LOVE – According to Poet Jane fisher, It makes us laugh; It makes us sing; It makes us sad; It makes us cry; It makes us seek the reason why; It makes us take; It makes us give; but above all else, it makes us live!

And God Loves you, that’s a fact.  Everyone tell your neighbor, “God Loves Me”

Today we are going to look into this thing called Love..

Three kinds of Biblical Love in the New Testament
Phileo love – (verb) Brotherly Love
Eros love (noun) refers to physical love or desire.
Agape love – (verb) Christian Love or Godly Love, Deep abiding love (used 117 times in the New Testament.)

Today we are going to see how God So Loved… as it was played out in Christ’s life, Christ’s words and Christ’s deeds.. We will focus on some key verses that should solidify that God So Loved concept in our hearts and minds.. and hopefully lead us to showing our “Faith” through our love for one another.

We are going to look at three of the most common and most recited verses in scripture about Love.  These verses many of you probably know by heart.. and when I get to one you know, if your so inclined, consider reciting them aloud with me.. it will be fun..

1 Corinthians 13 The Gift of Love

If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.

Through the writings of Apostle Paul, this is God’s definition of what Love truly is.. This is how we measure Love.. How we demonstrate Love.
If you have the Holy Spirit inside you.. then these Love traits should become more evident in you as you grow in your Christian Walk.

In my experience.. there are Three Stages of Love: Me, We, Them [elaborate]

Verse 13:8 Continues..
But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; 10 but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then we will see face to face.
Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. 13 And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.  [pause]

The greatest of these is Love..
Jesus demonstrats that Agape love so well. This whole Bible is really a Love story or love letter if you will. From beginning to the end, God shows His love for us, for me, his lost sheep; the Great Shepherd (Jesus) loves me this I know.

And of course another favorite verse about love is from John 3:16.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that who[so]ever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

God gave us His son.. so that by faith in Jesus.. we can be Born Again.. and have Eternal Life. That’s what we celebrate here today and tomorrow, in Christ’s birth. God in the Son came to earth to get down to a level so that we can personally know Him, and through faith, accept Him as our savior.. if we choose to do so..

I got a T-Shirt a few years ago about this verse, all it says is “I am.. Whosoever” Could God make the message any clearer?  He loves all of you that much..

Another great Love verse comes to us from John 15:9(JESUS SAID) 9 “As the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you. Remain in My love. 10 If you keep My commands you will remain in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commands and remain in His love. 11 “I have spoken these things to you so that My joy may be in you and your joy may be complete. 12 This is My command: love one another as I have loved you. 13 No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends.

Isn’t that a great verse! And Jesus did just that.. As our Savior and Friend, He took on all the sin of man, including all of my sin, and put them upon himself, and paid for the penalty of those sins as He put himself on the cross to be crucified, and then He Died for you and me. No greater love indeed. “Thank you Jesus”.

1 John 3:16Love in Action 16 This is how we have come to know love: He laid down His life for us. We should also lay down our lives for our brothers.
17 If anyone has this world’s goods and sees his brother in need but closes his eyes to his need—how can God’s love reside in him? 18 Little children, we must not love with word or speech, but with truth and action.

That’s exactly what Jesus did, and that is what we should be doing too. Love in Action. It’s not easy, its work, and sometimes we will even screw it up, but that’s okay. Get up, tend to your wounds, wipe the dirt off and do it again. That is what happened to the apostles over and over again, especially Peter; the leader of the first Christian church, he messed up several times. But then Jesus picked him up and got him going again each time. Jesus showed His love to Peter even though he even denied knowing Christ three times as He was heading to the cross to be crucified. And Jesus even told him ahead of time that he would do it. Oh the humiliation Peter must have felt. But he got up, licked his wounds and became the leader of the church.

We can see how Jesus demonstrated this Agape love so well to Peter, after Jesus rose from the grave. In John 21:15 it says:

15 When they had eaten breakfast, Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said to Him, “You know that I love You.” “Feed My lambs,” He told him.

16 A second time He asked him, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” “Yes, Lord,” he said to Him, “You know that I love You.” “Shepherd My sheep,” He told him.

17 He asked him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved that He asked him the third time, “Do you love Me?” He said, “Lord, You know everything! You know that I love You.” “Feed My sheep,” Jesus said.

Jesus so loved Peter that He forgave him his sin. Peter denied Him three times, and then Jesus had him confirm is love for him three times. And then he told Peter to get busy, to take care of the church family. That is Love demonstrated for Peter, but it also an example of the love Jesus has for us. Sacrificial Agape love. Think about this verse again as if it were written for you or me. If you replace Peter’s name here with yours, how would you respond?  Do you love me xxxx?  Do you love me xxxx?  Do you love me xxxx?

And what type of love do you have for Jesus. Is it phileo love, which refers to a brotherly/friendship type of love; or is it agape love, which means unconditional love. There is Big difference.. What kind of love do you have for the Savior? Would you lay your life down for Him as He did for you?

Now I am going to read to you what is called a Fathers Love Letter. It is a compilation of Bible verses from both the Old & New Testaments that are presented in the form of a love letter from God to you.
So sit back and relax and listen to God’s words of love to you now.

An Intimate Message from God to you    (fathersloveletter.com)

My Child…
You may not know me, but I know everything about you. I know when you sit down and when you rise up. I am familiar with all your ways. Even the very hairs on your head are numbered. For you were made in my image. In me you live and move and have your being. For you are my offspring. I knew you even before you were conceived. I chose you when I planned creation. You were not a mistake; For all your days are written in my book. I determined the exact time of your birth and where you would live. You are fearfully and wonderfully made. I knit you together in your mother’s womb And brought you forth on the day you were born.    [continued]

I have been misrepresented by those who don’t know me, I am not distant and angry, but am the complete expression of love; And it is my desire to lavish my love on you, simply because you are my child and I am your Father. I offer you more than your earthly father ever could, For I am the perfect Father. Every good gift that you receive comes from my hand. For I am your provider and I meet all your needs. My plan for your future has always been filled with hope, Because I love you with an everlasting love. My thoughts toward you are countless as the sand on the seashore And I rejoice over you with singing. I will never stop doing good to you For you are my treasured possession. I desire to establish you with all my heart and all my soul And I want to show you great and marvelous things. If you seek me with all your heart, you will find me. Delight in me and I will give you the desires of your heart For it is I who gave you those desires. I am able to do more for you than you could possibly imagine. For I am your greatest encourager, I am also the Father who comforts you in all your troubles. When you are brokenhearted, I am close to you. As a shepherd carries a lamb, I have carried you close to my heart. One day I will wipe away every tear from your eyes And I’ll take away all the pain you have suffered on this earth. I am your Father and I love you even as I love my son, Jesus. For in Jesus my love for you is revealed. He is the exact representation of my being And He came to demonstrate that I am for you, not against you, And to tell you that I am not counting your sins. Jesus died so that you and I could be reconciled. His death was the ultimate expression of my love for you. I gave up everything I loved that I might gain your love. If you receive the gift of my son Jesus, you receive me And nothing will ever separate you from my love again. Come home and I’ll throw the biggest party heaven has ever seen. I have always been Father and will always be Father. My question is…Will you be my child? I am waiting for you.
Love Always, Almighty GOD.

Application: When you are Home, When you are at Work, When you are feeling unloved.. even when you were unlovable.. Knot that God truly Loves you so..

God created the universe for you..  He didn’t need it…  He even put the stars in the Heavens for our pleasure..

John 13:34 – “I give you a new commandment: love one another. Just as I have loved you, you must also love one another. By this all people will know that you are My disciples if you have love for one another.”

So if you are a Christian…  then you must show your love to one another. We are to be a reflection of Him, like the moon is to the sun, we are to be reflection of the Son to the world.

This is the Eve of Christmas, when we celebrate proudly the birth of our savior Jesus Christ. He came as a babe in swaddling cloth, laid in a humble manger so the world could know personally who is this God that loves us so.

[Pass out Candy Canes] – Look at the candy cane. What do you see? Stripes that are red like the blood shed for me. White is for my Savior who’s sinless and pure. “J” is for Jesus, my Lord, that’s for sure! Turn it around and a staff you will see. Jesus, my shepherd, was born for me!   (Author Unknown)

Please Rise for an Invitation

In closing, for fun I give you a modified Beatles song, will you sing it with me?

All I need is HIS love
All You need is HIS love
All We need is HIS love, love
HIS love is all We need.

HE loves Me yeah yeah yeah..
HE loves You yeah yeah yeah..
HE loves Us yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah..
